SUMMARY:Navigating Policy-Focused Career Pathways: Exploring Graduates' Policy-Focused Careers
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join the New Jersey State Policy Lab to listen to and meet several of the many former students who have worked with NJSPL over the years. These alumni have gone on to pursue a variety of public policy-focused careers in areas including healthcare\, housing\, and economics. \nIn the four years since the NJSPL’s inception at Rutgers University\, it has employed more than 100 graduate and undergraduate students as part of specific research projects and/or in the annual summer internship program. Many of their former interns and research assistants have stepped into professional careers in assorted policy arenas at the local\, state\, and federal levels. \nThis event will feature former interns\, teaching assistants\, and research assistants who worked with the NJSPL. They will discuss their policy interests\, research\, and career paths\, followed by time for networking\, where current students will learn more about careers where they can make a difference in assorted policy arenas. SUMMARY:Plan4HealthNJ Studio: A Diagnostic Approach  to Incorporating Public Health in Master Plans
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by the American Planning Association-New Jersey Chapter with a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, this Plan4HealthNJ studio enabled students to collaborate with officials and practitioners\, engage in research and beta test ideas for APA-NJ to work with select municipalities to update their master plans\, zoning ordinances and capital improvement programs to incorporate public health outcomes. Areas of focus included access to healthy food and agriculture\, environmental health and sustainability\, healthcare access\, mobility\, housing and community design and policy and public engagement. Students engaged in research\, tested toolkits created by APA-NJ\, explored how these toolkits could help urban\, suburban and rural towns in New Jersey incorporate public health outcomes into their plans\, ordinances and investments\, and provided findings and recommendations that may prove helpful when APA-NJ works with municipalities in 2026 to update their Master Plans\, ordinances and CIPs to incorporate public health concerns. \nA light reception will follow the event. As the pendulum swings widely\, the fair solution is to build lasting safe spaces for equity and inclusion\, where health equity and social justice can be achieved. While various populations are pushed off the “Cliff of Good Health\,” the power of data stories\, coalition building\, storytelling for change\, and strong policy advocacy ensures the will of the people remains heard. \nDr. Chris T. Pernell is a dynamic physician leader and social change agent. In her practice\, she focuses on health justice\, community-based advocacy\, and population-wide health promotion and disease prevention. A celebrated visionary and apostle of public health\, Dr. Chris serves as the Director of the NAACP Center for Health Equity. The Center is charged with driving equitable health outcomes and transforming healthcare systems while valuing the whole person. Prior to joining the nation’s oldest and most venerable civil rights organization\, she launched The Esther Group\, a public health consulting and health equity strategy firm. DESCRIPTION:The Bloustein School will present the 18th Annual Krueckeberg Doctoral Conference in Urban Studies\, Urban Planning\, and Public Policy on Friday\, March 13\, 2026. The conference is organized by doctoral students for doctoral students engaged in urban planning\, urban studies\, health\, and policy-related research across disciplines and universities in the tri-state NJ-NY-PA metropolitan region. Named after Professor Donald A. Krueckeberg\, the conference commemorates Don Krueckeberg’s long-running commitment to doctoral education by providing a one-day forum highlighting doctoral student research at the cutting edge of urban studies\, planning\, and public policy. \nDoctoral students at any stage of dissertation research are invited and encouraged to present their work at the conference. Carlton\, DrPH\, MS\, CPH\, FACHE \nWhat does it take to build a career in public health when the work itself is under-resourced\, politically contested\, or simply not valued by the communities and institutions you are trying to serve? \nJoin the Bloustein School’s Undergraduate Public Health Program for the next installment of our “What’s Next?” Careers in Public Health series\, featuring Dr. Erik L. Carlton. Dr. Carlton will discuss the challenges of practicing and leading in public health amid difficult political and organizational environments and what emerging public health professionals can learn from those challenges as they prepare to enter the field. \nDr. Carlton is a tenured Associate Professor of Health Policy\, Management and Leadership and Director of the Appalachian Health Workforce Institute at West Virginia University. He is also Founder and Chief Learning Officer of The Chrysalis Leadership Group and serves on the faculty of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Board-certified in both public health and healthcare administration\, Dr. Carlton has nearly two decades of leadership experience in the public and private sectors and has trained thousands of administrative and clinical leaders from around the world. \nDrawing on his experiences as a public health practitioner\, educator\, consultant\, and leader\, Dr. Carlton will offer students a candid look at what it means to pursue public health work when resources\, institutional support\, and public acceptance cannot be taken for granted\, and how future professionals can prepare themselves to navigate those realities. \nThe 30-minute talk will be followed by 15 minutes of student Q&A. \nStudents considering careers in public health\, healthcare\, health policy\, administration\, or leadership are encouraged to attend. \nRSVP HERE

SUMMARY:Community and Belonging Lecture | Built to Belong: From Advocacy to Action  in Launching New Jersey’s  Public Health Institute
DESCRIPTION:The Bloustein School Annual Community and Belonging Lecture is presented by Dr. Denise Anderson\, an accomplished public health executive with experience in hospitals\, government\, nonprofit organizations\, and academia. She is the Inaugural Executive Director of The Center for Health Equity & Wellbeing\, New Jersey’s newly designated Public Health Institute. She serves on the boards of the African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey (AACCNJ) and is President-Elect of the New Jersey Public Health Association (NJPHA). She holds a BS in Human Ecology\, an MPH from Rutgers\, and a Ph.D. in Urban Systems from Rutgers and NJIT.  Further\, Dr. Anderson is a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Public Health Prevention Service Fellow\, an Eagleton Institute of Politics Fellow\, and a Yale Pozen-Commonwealth Fund Fellow in Health Equity Leadership. \nRegistration is requested by visiting go.rutgers.edu/anderson26. \nPublic institutions do more than administer programs and distribute resources; they communicate whose experiences matter\, whose voices influence decisions\, and who belongs within the systems designed to protect our collective well-being. Building equitable public health infrastructure therefore requires more than creating a new organization. It requires challenging entrenched systems\, cultivating trust\, sharing power\, and translating community priorities into sustainable policy and action. \nDrawing from her experience launching the Center for Health Equity & Wellbeing—New Jersey’s Public Health Institute (CHEW-NJPHI)—Dr. Denise Anderson will offer a candid examination of what it takes to build a statewide institution from the ground up. The discussion will trace CHEW-NJPHI’s journey from advocating for authorizing legislation to establishing an administrative and incubation partnership with Acenda Integrated Health\, developing a community-centered strategic plan\, and assuming a significant role in New Jersey’s Rural Health Transformation initiative. \nIn this case study\, Dr. Anderson will explore the tensions and opportunities of turning vision into infrastructure: building legitimacy while building capacity\, balancing urgency with sustainability\, and navigating relationships among government\, communities\, funders\, and institutional partners. The lecture invites participants to consider how public health institutions can be intentionally designed to advance belonging\, strengthen community power\, and embed equity not only in their programs but also in their structures\, partnerships\, investments\, and measures of success.
