SUMMARY:Inside the Black Box: Mapping Neighborhood Boundaries in a Muslim Informal Settlement. Case of Jamia Nagar\, Delhi\, India
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Zehra Mahdi\, Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellow at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy and doctoral candidate at the Department of Architecture and Regional Planning\, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)\, Kharagpur\, India. Her doctoral research focuses on neighborhood change in informal settlements in Delhi\, India that are predominantly inhabited by the Muslim community and influenced by the presence of anchor institutions. \nMuslim spaces in India are often characterized by a socio-spatial bundle of attributes enmeshed in planning informalities. They are frequently viewed through a lens of opaqueness and homogeneity by the State\, planners\, policy-makers\, and other residents. Such a generalization of space leads to stigmatization and uneven distribution of State resources. This talk illustrates the internal heterogeneity and dynamics of socio-spatial organization within Muslim spaces. It examines how residents define their neighborhoods by evoking spatial and non-spatial variables of distinctions\, and how their perception and delineation of neighborhoods differ based on their positionality. It then provides a method to reach consensus from multiple\, overlapping boundaries to operational neighborhood units. It is an attempt to move beyond the binaries of formal-informal\, religious\, and ethnic groups as black-box typifications in urban spaces\, and to counter map admin-political boundaries ‘from below’ by accounting for residents’ sensibilities\, agency\, and consensus.

DESCRIPTION:New Brunswick\, NJ has many architectural gems that often go unappreciated. The city has also experienced significant redevelopment and in tandem\, historic preservation versus development challenges. This tour will consider these diverse forces that typify many American cities. \nThe tour will begin at the entrance to the Bloustein School\, Civic Square Building\, 33 Livingston Avenue\, New Brunswick\, N.J. Participants should meet at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday\, October 13. From the Civic Square Building\, tour participants will walk down Livingston Avenue\, return to George Street\, tour downtown\, and end by the Rutgers Barnes & Noble bookstore at about 12 noon. \nParticipants are welcome to join us at the Starbucks Cafe at the Rutgers Barnes & Noble bookstore for post-tour refreshments (buy your own) and conversation. This is a free\, custom tour offered to members of the Bloustein School and APA-NJ communities. Spouses\, significant others\, children\, friends and alumni are invited. \nThe tour guides are Drs. David and Barbara Listokin\, who teach urban redevelopment and historic preservation courses at the Bloustein School. \nRegistration not required. DESCRIPTION:Rethinking AI for Shared Empowerment (RAISE) 2024 is a public informatics data science competition that will test skills in data analysis and problem-solving while highlighting the importance of data analysis in enabling improvements to public policy and social empowerment.  Hosted by Rutgers Bloustein School’s Master of Public Informatics (MPI) program\, this year’s theme is Does News Media Spread Fear of AI? She is an experienced consultant who develops and delivers trainings and presentations for individuals with disabilities\, healthcare providers\, and other allied professionals. Colleen is the co-founder of the New Jersey Disability Collective\, member of the Disability Action Committee\, and board chair for the Alliance Center for Independence and chair of the New Jersey Statewide Independent Living Council. \nMital Gajjar – Mital Gajjar\, who was first diagnosed with bilateral hearing loss at the age of 5\, started Rutgers Empowering Disabilities (RED) organization at Rutgers during her time as an undergraduate student in 2010. She currently teaches young children and mentors students in elementary school to college. She advocates for disability by working with the population throughout her career\, started an online group for occupational therapists with disabilities\, and understands the struggle of multiple identities through being the first disabled child of an immigrant family from a minority group. \nJillian Curwin – Jillian is a writer\, content creator\, and advocate for dwarfism and disability awareness based in New York City. She has written articles for Betches Media talking about disability representation in fashion and entertainment along with highlighting current events in the disability space. In addition\, she has consulted with brands and organizations about disability inclusion. She is the host of the podcast Always Looking Up where she talks to little people\, disabled people\, those that are disability-adjacent and allies about living in a world that was not necessarily designed for them. \nT.D. Mitchell – Best known as writer and story editor for the acclaimed TV series “Army Wives\,” T.D. Mitchell is an autodidact and human rights advocate. She serves as a narrative consultant and speechwriter in crafting messaging for international NGOs/nonprofits. For the Writers Guild Institute\, she mentors folks from marginalized communities to give them the tools to tell their own narratives. The pandemic led to her own near-death and resulting injuries that radically shifted her artistic process\, forms and narrative point of view.
