SUMMARY:Parking Fight! The Stuart Meck Memorial Lecture in Land Use Law and Affordable Housing
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Henry Grabar\, Journalist and Loeb Fellow\, Harvard University Graduate School of Design \nIn the 2023 Stuart Meck Memorial Lecture in Land Use Law and Affordable Housing\, journalist Henry Grabar argues that the pursuit of a perfect parking space is the prime mover of local politics\, contemporary architecture\, and urban design. He presents his historical research on the “parking problem\,” reporting on parking’s role in community decision-making\, and explains the environmental disaster that is American parking policy. Finally\, he reviews the movement for parking reform\, from the pioneering work of Donald Shoup to contemporary policy changes and their results\, as activists try to repair the harms of a century- long experiment in planning for parking. \nHenry Grabar is a journalist who writes about cities. He’s a Loeb Fellow at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design and a staff writer at Slate. His work has also appeared in 99 Percent Invisible\, the Atlantic\, the Guardian\, Harper’s\, the New York Times\, the Wall Street Journal\, and other publications. He has discussed these subjects on television and radio\, and before audiences at New America\, the National Press Foundation\, and various conferences and classrooms. His most recent book is Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World\, which was published in May\, 2023 by Penguin Press. \nRSVP at https://go.rutgers.edu/parkingfight

SUMMARY:Keep your enemies close: Adversarial collaborations will improve science
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Cory Clark\, University of Pennsylvania’s Adversarial Collaboration Project \nCory Clark is a Visiting Scholar in the Wharton School and the School of Arts and Sciences at University of Pennsylvania. She and colleagues advocate for adversarial collaborations\, a methodological procedure in which disagreeing scholars mutually design research procedures to test their competing hypotheses. This process can facilitate more rigorous science because both proponents and opponents must agree to fair and unbiased tests. \nSponsored by Cooperation Interest Group at Rutgers (CIG@R)\, a university-wide group of people interested in cooperation and collaboration\, involving Individuals from both Rutgers and Arizona State.

SUMMARY:Brownfield Development Area (BDA) Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Does your municipality have abandoned or underutilized contaminated properties? Do you have a vision for your blighted brownfield sites? This workshop is open to elected officials and staff of municipal\, county\, quasi-governments\,\nand associated consultants. \nNJDEP’s Brownfield Development Area (BDA) program is a voluntary partnership between municipalities\, stakeholders and the NJDEP Office of Brownfield and Community Revitalization to work closely together to repurpose abandoned or underutilized contaminated “brownfield” properties. The BDA program partners with diverse communities affected by multiple brownfield sites to identify technical and financial resources to help design and implement investigation\, remediation\, and reuse plans for these properties in a coordinated manner\, so blighted brownfield properties can be remediated and redeveloped in a timely manner. \nYou will learn: \n\nHow your municipality would benefit from being designated as a Brownfield Development Area\nHow other municipalities have benefitted from a BDA designation\nThe components of the BDA application\nHow to obtain free technical assistance in transforming your brownfields into community assets\n\nSponsored by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection and the NJIT TAB Program. \nREGISTER HERE
