SUMMARY:CAWP's Annual Senator Wynona Lipman Chair in Women's Political Leadership with U.S. Senator Laphonza Butler
DESCRIPTION:The Power of Black Women’s Leadership in Politics\nU.S. Senator Laphonza Butler \nAppointed to the United States Senate by California Governor Gavin Newsome\, Senator Laphonza Butler has spent her career championing fairness and justice. For nearly two decades\, she was an organizer and leader in the labor movement. At just 30 years old Senator Butler was elected president of California’s largest homecare and nursing home workers union SEIU local 2015. She helped to orchestrate raising California’s minimum wage to $15 an hour and secure paid sick days for the state’s home care workers. As president\, she united the power of home care workers statewide\, growing the union’s membership to more than 325\,000 and making SEIU 2015 the largest homecare worker union in America. From working to expand retirement security by passing CA Secure Choice Retirement Savings program\, to efforts to improve health outcomes by passing legislation to protect children from cigarette marketing\, Butler has been able to work across traditional lines of difference in order to make progress on issues that matter. Prior to her appointment to the Senate\, Senator Butler was president of EMILYs list\, which is dedicated to electing Democratic pro-choice women. During her tenure\, EMILYs list recruited and supported over 600 women to run for elected office. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Implications of Robotics for Public Policy
DESCRIPTION:Online presentation by Prof. Clint Andrews \nInnovations in robotics are now present in many aspects of human endeavour\, from robotic vacuum cleaners to autonomous battlefield drone swarms. Alongside the intended effects of these innovations are some emerging\, unintended adverse consequences. Legal and political processes exist in part to prevent and mitigate such harms. This presentation offers a systematic analysis of the emerging routes by which applications of embodied artificial intelligence—robotics—elicit public policy responses. It develops a typology that classifies robotics applications according to how they interact with individual humans\, large-scale human populations\, and specific physical settings; and whether the robots operate alone\, in swarms\, or in integrated cyberenvironments. Each case interacts with public policymaking processes in different ways\, spanning tort liability law\, regulatory codes and standards\, and policies for assessing and managing risk. Clear roles emerge for voluntary standards\, international collaboration among governance bodies\, professionals cross-trained in robotics and public policy\, and institutions that effectively anticipate emerging problems. \nRegister Here: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/415611

SUMMARY:Introducing a New Inland Design Flood Elevation Dataset for NJADAPT
DESCRIPTION:On July 17\, 2023\, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) adopted its Inland Flood Protection Rule which\, among other actions\, establishes a new Design Flood Elevation (DFE) standard for specific types of new construction and redevelopment. The new DFE is 3 feet above the elevation of the 1% Chance Annual Flood for New Jersey (which is also known as the 100-year flood) or\, where NJDEP flood mapping is available\, 2 feet above NJDEP’s flood hazard area design flood elevation\, if that results in a DFE higher than FEMA’s 1% flood plus 3 feet. \nIn consultation with the NJDEP\, the NJ Climate Change Resource Center at Rutgers University prepared a new data layer for non-regulatory planning purposes consistent with the new 2023 DFE for inclusion in its NJADAPT suite of data visualization and mapping tools. The new data layer provides a crucial understanding of where Design Flood Elevations will change for new construction and redevelopment and can support local efforts to safeguard critical facilities and community assets. \nIt is important to note that the new data layer is meant to be used as a non-regulatory planning tool for reference only and should not be relied upon for site-specific flood impact analyses\, permitting\, or other legal or regulatory purposes. The accuracy of this dataset is limited by the data and methods available to create it. This dataset is not based on survey-quality data and must not be used in replacement of survey data.\nJoin us for an overview of the new data layer. The new data layer will be posted on the NJADAPT website immediately after the event. \nPanelists\nNJ Climate Change Resource Center:\nJeanne Herb\nLucas Marxen\nJonathan DeLura\nPritpal Bamhrah\nMarjorie Kaplan\nNJ Department of Environmental Protection:\nKunal Patel \nVirtual Event \nRegister here: https://go.rutgers.edu/NJADAPT24
