SUMMARY:Introducing a New Inland Design Flood Elevation Dataset for NJADAPT
DESCRIPTION:On July 17\, 2023\, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) adopted its Inland Flood Protection Rule which\, among other actions\, establishes a new Design Flood Elevation (DFE) standard for specific types of new construction and redevelopment. The new DFE is 3 feet above the elevation of the 1% Chance Annual Flood for New Jersey (which is also known as the 100-year flood) or\, where NJDEP flood mapping is available\, 2 feet above NJDEP’s flood hazard area design flood elevation\, if that results in a DFE higher than FEMA’s 1% flood plus 3 feet. \nIn consultation with the NJDEP\, the NJ Climate Change Resource Center at Rutgers University prepared a new data layer for non-regulatory planning purposes consistent with the new 2023 DFE for inclusion in its NJADAPT suite of data visualization and mapping tools. The new data layer provides a crucial understanding of where Design Flood Elevations will change for new construction and redevelopment and can support local efforts to safeguard critical facilities and community assets. \nIt is important to note that the new data layer is meant to be used as a non-regulatory planning tool for reference only and should not be relied upon for site-specific flood impact analyses\, permitting\, or other legal or regulatory purposes. The accuracy of this dataset is limited by the data and methods available to create it. This dataset is not based on survey-quality data and must not be used in replacement of survey data.\nJoin us for an overview of the new data layer. The new data layer will be posted on the NJADAPT website immediately after the event. \nPanelists\nNJ Climate Change Resource Center:\nJeanne Herb\nLucas Marxen\nJonathan DeLura\nPritpal Bamhrah\nMarjorie Kaplan\nNJ Department of Environmental Protection:\nKunal Patel \nVirtual Event \nRegister here: https://go.rutgers.edu/NJADAPT24

SUMMARY:Careers: Professional Branding
DESCRIPTION:This program is for all students (except MPP who will have this program in their AFE 1 class). It is also part of the JUMP START series for first-year students. \nTo clearly differentiate your value and what you bring to the table\, you need to do more than have a good reputation. You need to have an outstanding personal brand. Unlike your reputation\, your personal brand is much more intentional. It is how you want people to see you. It’s about visibility and the values that you outwardly represent. \nJoin Andrea Garrido and Cheryl Egan to learn more about this important topic while on the journey from student to professional. \nRSVP here.

SUMMARY:Bildner Center: Homes of the Past: A Lost Jewish Museum
DESCRIPTION:Jeffrey Shandler\, Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies at Rutgers University\, will discuss his new book\, Homes of the Past: A Lost Jewish Museum (Indiana University Press\, 2024). Shandler tells the powerful story of how immigrant Jewish scholars in 1940s New York sought to build a museum to commemorate the Jewish cultures of Eastern Europe destroyed during the Holocaust. Newly arrived in the United States\, this small group of Polish Jews had devoted their professional lives to the study of Europe’s Yiddish-speaking Jews at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. Faced with the devastating knowledge that returning to their former homes and resuming their scholarly work there was no longer viable\, they sought to address their profound sense of loss by continuing their work\, under radically different circumstances\, to document the European Jewish lives\, places\, and ways of living that were being destroyed. \nHomes of the Past explores this largely unknown episode of modern Jewish history and museum history and demonstrates that the project\, even though it was never realized\, marked a critical inflection point in the dynamic interrelations between Jews in America and Eastern Europe. \nSupported by the Sagner Family Foundation \nRSVP at https://bildnercenter.rutgers.edu/events/upcoming-events/icalrepeat.detail/2024/09/18/142/-/homes-of-the-past-a-lost-jewish-museum
