Here’s how Andy Kim’s bombshell court win will remake Jersey politics

New Jersey politics will be turned on its head by Friday’s ruling from a federal judge that guts the power of the county bosses, all sides agree.

But what exactly will the demolition of the infamous county line change? Let’s take a look.

First, it will open the doors to a flood of new candidates for office. Good civic-minded people won’t have to kiss the ring of the bosses anymore. They can collect signatures on their own and qualify for a spot on the ballot with equal standing, a fair shot.

“Democracy is about voters deciding,” says Julia Sass Rubin, a Rutgers professor and an expert witness in the federal suit that challenged the line. “We don’t need to be protected from democracy by four or five people who think they know better what’s good for us.”
