Commentary: No news is bad news for democracy

May 6, 2024

In observance of World Press Freedom Day, faculty fellow Linda Stamato underscores the critical importance of accessible, reliable information for a functioning democracy. She highlights the rising costs of newspapers, making quality news unaffordable for many. This financial barrier is exacerbated by the spread of misinformation on social media, where investigative reporting is often misappropriated without compensation. The closure of local newspapers also demonstrates the significant impact on community awareness and education, as local voices and critical reporting disappear at an alarming rate.

To address this crisis, Stamato advocates for nonprofit journalism as a potential solution. She gives examples, including The Texas Tribune and NJ Spotlight, to show how member contributions and foundation support can sustain quality news coverage. Local outlets, such as Morristown Green, also rely on community donations and local advertisers to continue operating.
