The share of white and Hispanic Americans who were employed increased last month, after falling precipitously in April, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employment also increased for black Americans, but it was less robust. The jobless rate for adult women, who have been hit harder in this economic downturn than men, also fell in May. Safely reopening places of business is the key to recovery, says Bill Rodgers, chief economist at the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development.
