Soumitra Bhuyan, Ph.D., MPH

Executive Director, Associate Professor

Dr. Soumitra Bhuyan is the Executive Director of the Health Administration Programs and an Associate Professor at Bloustein School. He leads the Health Administration program which includes an undergraduate Health Administration program, a nationally ranked Master of Health Administration (MHA) program, and the newly established Doctor of Health Administration (DHA) program. In this role, he oversees daily operations, strategic planning, curriculum development, student success, and alumni engagement. Dr. Bhuyan is an alumnus of the Rutgers Leadership Academy, a yearlong leadership program for mid-career faculty and staff aspiring to broader academic leadership roles.

Dr. Bhuyan is a nationally recognized leader in healthcare management education. In 2025, he was honored with the National Leadership Excellence Award, jointly awarded by the Baldrige Foundation and the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME), in recognition of his outstanding contributions to advancing the quality of healthcare management education. He was previously recognized with the 2013 “Rising Star” Award from the American Public Health Association’s Health Administration Section, highlighting his potential in health administration and public health practice. In 2017, he received the Charles E. Gibbs Leadership Prize for his impactful research on women’s health policy.

Dr. Bhuyan’s research focuses on chronic disease management and health information systems, with a particular emphasis on leveraging informatics applications for population health management. He has an extensive body of work, authoring over 50 peer-reviewed publications in leading health services and policy journals, along with numerous editorials. Beyond academia, Dr. Bhuyan’s writings have appeared in national and regional media outlets, including The Hill, ABC News, Becker’s Hospital Review, and The Star-Ledger, among others. His upcoming textbook, Fundamentals of Healthcare Management: Theory and Practice (co-edited with Dr. Kevin Broom of the University of Pittsburgh), is set to be published by Springer in 2025.

Dr. Bhuyan is actively involved in healthcare education accreditation and policy. He serves as an Accreditation Fellow for CAHME and is a member of the Standards Council, which oversees accreditation processes and makes recommendations on policy changes. Dr. Bhuyan is an Associate Editor of BMJ Global Health and serves on the editorial boards of The Journal of Health Administration Education and Hospital Topics.
