Rep. Andy Kim’s Senate Bid Aims to Engage New Jersey’s Growing Asian American Voters

May 29, 2024

Rep. Andy Kim, a Korean American Democrat, is running for a Senate seat in New Jersey, where Asian Americans make up 11% of the state’s population. Kim’s campaign could engage this growing voting bloc and promote political reform in the state…

Kim’s campaign also comes at a time when the political landscape in New Jersey is shifting. In March, Kim succeeded in his lawsuit to bring down the Democratic county line, a controversial ballot design system that lets county political parties group their endorsed candidates together. This change could lead to more diverse candidates running for office and increased political engagement.

Julia Sass Rubin, a Rutgers professor whose research was instrumental in dismantling the party line system, stated, “I think the most immediate impact will be more people will run for office… I think we will see a much more diverse slate of candidates.”
