The story of thalidomide is at once a tragedy of international scope, and, given the FDA’s refusal to allow it to be dispensed in America, a paean to heroism and courage at home. It’s a tribute, especially, to Frances Oldham Kelsey, a young pharmacologist who withheld her approval, and, it underscores the critical importance of federal drug regulation.
