Announcing the Passing of Arlene Pashman, CUPR Senior Editor

March 3, 2025

Arlene Pashman, a long-time senior editor for the Center for Urban Policy Research (CUPR), passed away on March 1, 2025 after a brief illness. Arlene retired from the Bloustein School in May 2011.

Bloustein School Distinguished Professor David Listokin, who worked with Arlene for more than three decades at CUPR, shared some of his recollections of working with Arlene. Always the consummate professional, she transformed many a rough draft into polished prose with an uncanny ability to fact-check and find the most obscure of references. In addition to editing many technical manuscripts on a wide variety of topics,  doing book layouts with an artistic eye,  perfecting desktop publishing, and working on marketing and fulfillment of the many CUPR books that had a profound national and international impact on urban planning and related disciplines, she assisted Bloustein faculty and research units.

All this was done with a smile, formidable energy, and a keen sense of wry humor, and she was always an exemplary caring, warm, and supportive colleague across the decades.

Born in Elizabeth, NJ, Arlene was raised and resided in Carteret, NJ for many years prior to settling in Green Brook, NJ. She was a graduate of the Carteret School system and was employed by Rutgers University in the Center for Urban Policy Research as an editor, until her retirement. Arlene had a tremendous sense of humor and an immense love for writing. She was a loving wife, grandmother and sister who will be deeply missed by her family and many friends.

Arlene was predeceased by her parents, Abraham and Gladys Schwartz. Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Joel Pashman; son, Scott Pashman, with his wife Rachel; two grandchildren, who were the highlight of Arlene’s life, Ethan and Joshua; brother, Joel Albert, with his wife Beverly; niece, Alyssa Matulay, with her husband Justin and great-niece, Margot.
