Austin Lee MCRP ’10

Austin Lee MCRP ‘10 worked for over a decade in the transportation sector at the city, special district, county, and state levels. Crediting the “excellent education he received at the Bloustein School,” he served in various roles, from administrative to management to operations. Until recently, he was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Transportation Research Board.

He recently self-published Attraversare: The Travels of Life, a deeply personal, immediate, and honest memoir. It captures a period of upheaval and transition through moments of grief, uncertainty, and change, as well as those minor, stubborn victories that keep life moving forward. Written with a style that is down-to-earth, vivid, and reflective, Austin’s story embraces a raw and authentic tone that rises above the fleeting distractions of this world. Leaning into the emotional weight of experiences without being melodramatic, Attraversare: The Travels of Life trusts the reader to sit still with their feelings and contemplate.

Austin Lee's new book book Attraversare, which features the back of a woman with long dark hair walking in a rugged desert landscape with a rainbow in a blue sky.Austin originally hails from California, where he found himself a participant in the policy decisions that led to the first region-wide COVID-19 lockdown in the U.S. After his wife passed away during this time, Austin became an “analog nomad” – an old-fashioned writer, traveling with a pen and paper and moving to places that inspired him to write.

When he begins to feel creatively stuck, and the space around him no longer provides a boost of inspiration, he bundles his bag, pencil, pad, and paper and moves on to greener pastures. A roaming, creative spirit, Austin is spending the upcoming winter in Kyrgyzstan.
