Professor Jim Samuel co-authored this editorial for Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence.

The rapid development of AI, coupled with fragmented and often fear-driven public information, necessitates initiatives in research, policy, education, and practice to mitigate associated risks and preserve societal values. Human-centered AI (HAI) has gained prominence as a paradigm that aligns AI advancements with human values and societal goals, emphasizing human enhancement, cultural sensitivity, and personal adaptability. HAI frameworks advocate for prioritizing human well-being in AI design, accommodating diverse cultural needs, and providing personalized support to maximize the effectiveness of AI applications. Collectively, the research highlights the need for multifaceted and multidisciplinary approaches to ensure AI technologies support human aspirations and advance responsibly and ethically. This sets the stage for the development of advanced AI systems that operate autonomously while prioritizing human values.
