Fourth annual Bike and Walk Summit to be held at Bloustein School, February 23

The Fourth Annual Bike & Walk Summit, “Sharing Responsibility,” presented by the New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition (NJBWC) in collaboration with the Bloustein School’s Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center, will be held Saturday, February 23, 2013 from 8:00 am – 5:00 p.m. in the Special Events Forum, Civic Square Building, 33 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ on the campus of Rutgers University.

The Bike & Walk Summit brings together legislators, advocates, planners, businesses, students, bike clubs and shops, and interested citizens for a day of panels, workshops, discussions and most importantly, networking with others who share an interest in a more sustainable lifestyle in New Jersey for all citizens.

The 2013 Summit is themed “Sharing Responsibility,” a concept that cyclists and pedestrians need to keep in the forefront as we work to make New Jersey’s roads safe for all users. The theme builds on an ongoing initiative to educate both cyclists and drivers on their rights and responsibilities. The initiative led to the summer letter-writing campaign urging a driver-cyclist dialogue in which NJBWC took a lead public role along with the Foundation and five NJ bike clubs. More than 20 panel sessions are planned with over 60 speakers anticipated to be in attendance. AICP certification maintenance credits are in process.

Featured speakers and panelists at the 2013 Summit to include James Corless, director of Transportation for AmericaKen Podziba, president and CEO ofBike New YorkSue Macy, author of Wheels of Change: How Women Rode the Bicycle to Freedom (With a Few Flat Tires Along the Way)David Herlihy, author of Bicycling: The History and The Lost Cyclist.

Topics that will be presented at the 2013 NJ Bike & Walk Summit include:

  • MAP-21—How communities can benefit from America’s new transportation bill
  • Working with local politicians to achieve bike and pedestrian-focused goals
  • “Complete Streets” implementation in communities
  • Pedaling across America—taking a cross-country cycling trip
  • Bicycle Friendly America program and how communities can achieve this designation
  • Starting a local bike and pedestrian advocacy group
  • Discussion with several authors of recently published cycling-related histories
  • Organizing cyclovias and other bicycling and walking events
  • Advocacy for trails users, including cyclists, hikers and equestrians
  • Bike shops and advocacy

The event is open to the public. Registration includes access to all of the day’s events, a light breakfast and full lunch. On-line pre-registration is available for $50 per attendee at http://njsummit2013.eventbrite.com/. Pre-registration price ends on Thursday, February 21 at midnight. Registration will also be available day-of-event for $65.

The New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition is a membership-based organization whose mission is to encourage and promote cycling, provide a collective voice for cyclists, and improve access for cyclists on New Jersey’s roads, highways, and trails. Goals and objectives include advocacy, focusing attention on cycling related issues, sponsoring public events, working with other advocacy groups, and promoting cycling as a healthy, enjoyable, efficient, and environmentally sustainable means of transportation and recreation.
