The devastation Hurricane Sandy leveled on theBorough of Belmar, NJ was wide-spread and immense. While the Borough’s response was aggressive and required multiple approaches to simultaneously clear debris from the streets, pump out massive amount of flooding that occurred with the storm surge, and engage contractors for many of the large-scale projects, there remained the need for assistance with smaller-scale projects including debris removal from parks and beach cleanup.

Following Hurricane Sandy, Bloustein School students, faculty and staff indicated an interest in helping shore communities however possible. The Bloustein School Student and Academic Services Office, in coordination with the Borough, established an Alternative Spring Break Day Trip to assist the community with post-Hurricane Sandy cleanup efforts.

On March 19, a group of 20 Bloustein graduate students and faculty went to Belmar to assist with beach cleanup. See the photos from our students and faculty here. (Photos by Clint Andrews and Rewa Marathe. All photos copyright Bloustein School)
