Soumitra Bhuyan promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure

Soumitra Bhuyan, who joined the faculty of the Bloustein School in 2019 as an assistant professor, has been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. At the graduate level, he teaches courses in the areas of population health, principles of health administration and professional development and at the undergraduate level teaches courses in population health. His primary teaching and research interests include chronic disease management, and health information systems with an overarching emphasis on population health.

During the last two years, Dr. Bhuyan has written numerous articles on the effects of the pandemic on food insecurity, increased risks to hospital cybersecurity, the importance of telemedicine in rural communities and those with under- or uninsured populations, and the need for improved hospital and public health data integration.

In November 2020 he was accepted to the accreditation fellowship program of the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME), a program designed for individuals with the potential to make significant contributions to health services administration education. 

He has received several awards from national organizations including the American Public Health Association (APHA) and Academy Health for his research and leadership activities. Also, an associate editor of the BMJ Global Health, he was the 2013 recipient of APHA’s “Rising Star” award, which recognizes the outstanding potential in the field of health administration and public health practice. In 2017, Dr. Bhuyan and colleagues received the 2017 Charles E. Gibbs Leadership Prize for their research in women’s health issues, which is awarded annually to recognize excellence in research on women’s health care or policy. 

Dr. Bhuyan also serves as the coach/mentor for the Rutgers MHA case competition teams for various regional and national case competitions, including guiding a team to a first place in the Graduate Healthcare Management Case Study Challenge organized by the Healthcare Planning and Marketing Society of New Jersey and Seton Hall University.
