Urban planning students see freight systems, supply chain management in action at Port Newark

April 16, 2014

A group of Bloustein School graduate students and lecturer Anne Strauss-Weider met with Beth Ann Rooney, Director of Port Security for the Port Authority of NY & NJ (far right) and Scott Schoenfeld, the Chief Operating Officer for the Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT) (third from left) to discuss the role of the Port Authority in the state’s freight system and supply chain. The group was also given an in-depth tour of the PNCT port and terminal.

Freight and distribution is the largest employer in New Jersey. This new course at the Bloustein School introduces students to the freight system and supply chain that keeps our economy moving. Supply chains link goods production to the end users; efficient freight systems are essential to the economy and our quality of life. Supply chains are also critical to companies and can make or break them.

“Students were fortunate to see almost every type of vessel as it was being worked — auto carriers with export vehicles, container vessels, salt vessels, Belgium block, and so much more.  The students learned quite a bit and will be incorporating today’s learning experience into their capstone project research,” said Strauss-Weider.

Ms. Strauss-Wieder is the principal and founder of the Westfield, N.J. firm bearing her name and has over 30 years of experience. She works closely and collaboratively with private sector stakeholders and public sector interests to ensure that supply chain projects reflect market realities, emerging trends and customer needs.
